Description

The genera are characterised by leaves in opposite pairs (rarely whorled or alternate), and regular, bisexual flowers with four (rarely 5–12) petals. The fruit is a capsule or berry containing several seeds, the seeds with a fleshy endosperm.cite-ref-4[4]

Phylogeny

The family Hydrangeaceae has two subfamilies, namely Jamesioideae and Hydrangeoideae. The subfamily Jamesioideae comprises the genera Jamesia and Fendlera.cite-ref-kim-et-al-2015-6-0[6]cite-ref-hufford-et-al-2001-7-0[7] They are the sister group to the remaining Hydrangeaceae.cite-ref-hufford-et-al-2001-7-1[7]cite-ref-kubitzki-2013-8-0[8] The subfamily Hydrangeoideae has two tribes:cite-ref-samain-et-al-2010-9-0[9]cite-ref-hufford-et-al-2001-7-2[7]cite-ref-kubitzki-2013-8-1[8] Hydrangeae consists of Hydrangea s.l.,cite-ref-samain-et-al-2010-9-1[9] and Philadelpheae consists of Philadelphus, Carpenteria, Deutzia, Kirengeshoma, Whipplea, and Fendlerella.cite-ref-hufford-et-al-2001-7-3[7]cite-ref-kubitzki-2013-8-2[8] Carpenteria is the sister group to Philadelphus.
